Shut Up, Don Imus

The Imus affair certainly gave us a lot to think about. When I first heard about what he said on the air about Rutgers' basketball players I was shocked--all I kept thinking about was the fact that my daughter is a Rutgers student, and how I would feel if someone called her a "ho."

I was addicted to the coverage of the event, especially the more nuanced discussions about race and gender. Time published a very good cover story on the matter, pointing out the faulty reasoning so many have used to justify Imus' words. It's not a free speech issue, it's not a rap music issue--it's a civility issue. Imus said his words in a non-fiction setting, revealing so much about where his head is.

Virginia Tech

Horrifying. Unspeakable. Profoundly sad. I don't know what else to write, say or think. I do know that I cannot stop thinking about what happened yesterday at Virginia Tech, and the pain many of the victims' families and friends are feeling right now. Whatever is revealed about the killer and his motives really won't matter--32 people are dead, many are wounded, and for what? The horror, the horror.
