It's All Greek to Me

I have been bilingual my entire life. In fact, my first language was Greek, and one of the first things I remember my parents telling me is that we should never speak to one another in our native language if there are people around us who do not understand it. That's why I am continually amazed that people who are bilingual, and who should know better, often overlook this social cue. I suppose that it flatters them in some way, makes them feel better about themselves.

I was looking through my old blog from freshman year & stumbled upon yours!

This is interesting, to say the least - despite the fact that I agree with you, do you think that you see these people as tactless because of the dogma established in your mind as an easily influenced young person? I wonder how you'd feel about it if you weren't bilingual? I am essentially bilingual, but I don't always feel the same way as you.

I work at Tarantella in Medford and there are two waitresses who are from Turkey - and they speak to each other in their native language out of ease. Is that considered lacking social grace, or is it simply more feasible for them?

I'm going to start catching up on your writing! It's always so intriguing to hear your thoughts and opinions.
