Them Phightin' Phils
Wow. As hard as it was to watch Willie Randolph, what a glorious run by the Phillies. Of course, I counted them out--any reasonable person looked at the number of games back and the number of games left, and concluded that it was highly improbable--which is what makes this even sweeter. Coming at the expense of the Mets (except for Randolph and Schoenweiss) was also sort of nice--anyone who saw the Red Sox/Mets World Series in '86 would agree (yeah, I'm a Sox fan). I couldn't watch the World Series in '87 because I was still in pain. When the Phils were up by 4 runs yesterday, I remembered the '04 Red Sox World Series after Johnny Damon hit a homer in the first inning. I went to the laundry room and grabbed my 18 year-old, broken-brimmed wool Sox cap, only to return it immediately after I had a flashback to '86, and Bill Buckner's legs. So I celebrated yesterday after the top of the ninth was over.
